CURRENT PROJECT: STRUCTURE AND ART
Through my collaborations with artists, I have started envisaging and developing structural systems by drawing on approaches and phenomena found in art and craft. For example, we have started to extend origami mathematics for curved crease folding and leveraged the depth of understanding in the artistic expression in order to develop transformative structural designs for adaptive footbridges. To enable self‐assembly to be utilized at all scales, we identified fundamental design principles for highly coupled crease pattern networks that require minimum discrete actuation to drive large‐scale complex folded motions. We also started to establish artifact design methodologies that exploit mechanical properties of smart materials (such as bimetals and wood).
